Steven M. Zak, M.D. is the director of neurophysiology at CINN. A board-certified neurophysiologist and electroencephalographer, Dr. Zak specializes in neurophysiological testing including, electroencephalography, evoked potentials, and intraoperative monitoring. Before accepting his directorship at CINN in 2001, Dr. Zak had supervised the intraoperative monitoring of more than 1000 surgical cases.
Dr. Zak is also a highly regarded, board-certified neurologist with over 15 years of experience. He is an authority on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with epilepsy and other seizure disorders. He also has extensive experience caring for patients with multiple sclerosis. Dr. Zak has participated in numerous clinical research trials with newer anticonvulsants and novel treatment protocols for this demyelinating disease.
Dr. Zak began his medical training at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois in 1977. He completed the Universitys honors program in medical education and earned his medical degree in 1981. After receiving his degree, Dr Zak continued his medical training with a neurology residency at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, Tucson, where he served as chief resident. In 1985, Dr. Zak returned to Chicago to hold a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology and seizure disorders at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 1986, he established a private neurology practice and instituted the intraoperative monitoring program at Ingalls Memorial Hospital, Harvey, Illinois. He remained at Ingalls and in private practice until he joined CINN. In addition to his responsibilities at the Institute, Dr. Zak serves as an instructor of clinical neurology at Northwestern University Medical School.
Dr. Zak holds memberships in several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Neurology, American Medical Association, Chicago Medical Society, and is a fellow of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society.
